Healing Happens Here — One Horse, One Heart at a Time
Mental health challenges affect every community — children navigating trauma, veterans facing anxiety, individuals living with disabilities, caregivers carrying invisible stress. Healing requires connection, trust, and safe spaces to grow.
At Miracles in Motion, that healing often begins with a horse.
Since 1988, we have been serving children and adults with disabilities, supporting veterans, and strengthening our community through professionally guided equine-assisted services designed to support mental, emotional, and physical well-being.
Horses are uniquely sensitive to human emotion. They respond honestly to body language, energy, and intention — offering immediate, nonjudgmental feedback. In this environment, participants build emotional awareness, practice self-regulation, and develop coping skills that translate directly into everyday life.
For veterans and first responders, equine-assisted services provide a powerful pathway for processing stress and trauma, rebuilding trust, and reconnecting with others who understand their journey. Many report improved emotional regulation, reduced anxiety, and a renewed sense of purpose.
For children facing social, cognitive, or emotional challenges, the arena becomes a place of confidence-building and discovery. Anxiety softens. Communication improves. Self-esteem grows. Sometimes the breakthrough is profound — a first word spoken, a head lifted higher, a new step taken with courage.
Our programs are intentionally designed to reduce stress, strengthen relationships, and foster meaningful peer connections. Participants gain confidence not only through their bond with the horse, but through connection with others walking similar paths.
Mental health treatment and support must be taken seriously. That is why our work is grounded in ethical standards, ongoing training, and professional mentorship within the equine-assisted services field. We are committed to delivering safe, research-informed programming that honors both participant and horse. With compassion, inclusion, respect, and achievement guiding every interaction, we create an environment where growth is not only possible — it is expected.
Each year, thousands are impacted by Miracles in Motion, supported by more than 15,000 volunteer hours and a herd of specially trained therapy horses, including three miniature horses. We serve individuals across Linn, Johnson, and six additional Iowa counties, offering services to those with physical, cognitive, and social challenges, chronic conditions, veterans, caregivers, and families.
But the impact extends beyond the individual.
Our work has also been recognized beyond the arena. Miracles in Motion was recently featured in the University of Iowa Educational News article “Healing Happens Here — One Horse, One Heart at a Time,” highlighting the powerful role equine-assisted services play in supporting mental health and emotional well-being. The feature underscores how connection, trust, and compassionate care — offered through our horses and professional staff — create meaningful change for individuals navigating trauma, stress, and life’s challenges.
Being recognized by an educational and research-focused institution affirms what we see every day: healing happens when evidence-informed practice meets heart-led connection. It reinforces the importance of accessible, ethical, and professionally guided mental health support rooted in community.
Caregivers find respite. Families find hope. Participants carry their confidence from the arena into classrooms, workplaces, and homes. The skills developed with a 1,200-pound partner — patience, trust, emotional control, communication — become life skills.
A transformation occurs when we bring together the energy and spirit of horses with people in need.
By supporting our Horses for Mental Health campaign, your support ensures that this work continues. Your gift sustains trained professionals, ongoing education and standards, safe facilities, and the well-being of the horses who make healing possible.
When humans and horses connect, mental health strengthens.
When confidence grows, lives change.
And when a community rallies together, healing multiplies.
Join us in moving miracles forward.
