Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, gratitude, and reflection, to honor the brave men and women who have made countless sacrifices in service to our country. Horses for Mental Health is dedicated to supporting our veterans and their families by raising awareness of the healing benefits horses can offer those seeking mental health support, and convening nonprofit organizations that provide trauma-focused mental health services that incorporate horses.

We can support our heroes by encouraging education and awareness about the unique mental health challenges faced by veterans and increasing understanding among friends, family, and the wider community.

PTSD is a common concern for veterans.

The transition to civilian life is extremely difficult and many veterans and military personnel struggle with invisible wounds such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions, long after they return home. One significant barrier to seeking help is the stigma associated with mental health.

Horses for Mental Health seeks to encourage open conversations about mental health and uplift nonprofits that can support those who need assistance. By breaking down the barriers of stigma, we can foster an environment that promotes healing and emotional well-being for our veterans.

How can horses help our heroes?

Partnering with horses in a professional mental health setting can be a very powerful avenue for reducing the effects of trauma and preventing veteran suicide.

As herd animals, horses can acutely sense intentions and emotions. Under the guidance of trained professionals, horses offer non-biased feedback that can ultimately help heal relationships with oneself and others. Veterans who have gone through mental health programs with horses have reported increased life satisfaction, decreased stress, improved coping skills, and better communication abilities.

The Seen Through Horses campaign has convened 80 nonprofit organizations that provide these vital mental health services to Veterans across the United States. Many of these organizations expressly support veterans and their families in providing mental health programs that incorporate horses.
