Before I knew how to speak, I knew how to appreciate horses. I’ve been fascinated with them ever since I was a child, and there are countless reasons why. Apart from their magnificent beauty, they’re also wonderful teachers who have taught me so much about finding peace and emotional regulation through dark periods in my life.
As a poet and voice actor, I could never have imagined art workshops existing where I could be creative in nature and spend time with horses, too! Thanks to the Crescent Moon Center, my childhood dreams have become a reality.
The first workshop I attended with the Crescent Moon Center was focused on writing poetry, and that was an unforgettable experience. By observing and interacting with the local horse herd, my group learned what it takes to embrace community and how our subtle emotions can be sensed across species. Not only did we write poems about the horses, but we also had the incredible opportunity to read these poems to the very horses who inspired us. It was deeply healing to witness people laugh and cry from such an intimate experience, and I can’t recommend it enough for those seeking to connect with themselves and nature.
After that workshop, I was inspired to write the following poem:
The Breath of Life
Although I’m still determining the details behind my faith,
my life changed the moment I was told to connect with a horse’s breath.
I realized that God did breathe life into our bodies
because it was through that exchange of breath, I found the meaning of life.
Being kissed by the warm scent of hay made me feel one with the Earth.
When I read one of my haikus outside and sighed,
there was a sudden gust of wind so strong it was as if the hills exhaled at the same time.
I was told the ranch is with me.
I now know God is also with me.
