Some stories are easier to tell when a horse is listening.
The mission of Maryland Therapeutic Riding is to transform lives by connecting humans and horses in a nurturing environment that fosters healing and growth for all. We work to improve the quality of life for children and adults navigating physical, emotional, cognitive, and mental health challenges.
Equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) at MTR is an experiential mental health service that has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief while improving overall well-being for our participants. There’s no riding, just real-time connection, reflection, and discovery through work with our horses.
This relationship-based approach offers an accessible pathway to healing for those who may otherwise go without care. Horses respond honestly and without judgment, making them powerful partners in therapy.
Participants are invited into a calm, supportive environment with our horses where healing can happen without pressure or expectation. For some, it’s the first time they feel truly seen. For others, it’s a chance to rebuild trust, regulate emotions, and rediscover their strength. What begins as a simple interaction with a horse often becomes something much more—a path toward resilience, confidence, and hope.
Your donation makes our work possible.
It helps provide access to equine-assisted services, supports the care of our incredible horses, and sustains a place where individuals and families can experience meaningful transformation. Because of you, more people can discover the powerful connection between humans and horses—and the impact it can have on their lives.
During Mental Health Awareness Month, we are proud to be part of the Horses for Mental Health Campaign, raising awareness about horses as partners in mental health care and expanding access to these life-changing experiences.
Your donation goes directly to MTR, helping ensure our services are within reach for all who can benefit.
Thank you for being part of a community rooted in compassion, connection, and hope.
Healing doesn’t always begin with words—sometimes, it begins with a horse.
