At The Arc of Augusta we are committed to creating opportunities where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities can truly flourish. Every program we pursue is guided by the belief that meaningful experiences build stronger, healthier individuals.
A funding campaign focused on horses for mental health would allow us to expand one of the most impactful types of engagement we can offer. Horses naturally encourage mindfulness, emotional awareness, and nonverbal communication. Their calm and intuitive presence helps participants manage stress, build trust, and develop patience and self-control. These experiences can be transformative, especially for individuals who may struggle in more traditional therapeutic environments.
Through our partnership with Tarpan Conservation Program in Staunton, our participants are introduced to the historic Tarpan horses in a safe, structured setting. They learn proper approaches, leading techniques, and basic care, all while forming meaningful connections with the animals. This hands-on interaction strengthens problem-solving skills, responsibility, and social confidence, while also supporting conservation education.
Investing in a horses for mental health campaign would directly enhance our ability to provide innovative, evidence-informed experiences that nurture emotional resilience and personal growth. For the individuals we serve, time spent with horses is more than an activity. It is an opportunity to discover strength, purpose, and the confidence to thrive in their community.
