Horses are incredible creatures. I grew up riding, and knew intuitively that horses carried something so special it was almost intangible. As I grew up, I found that my love of horses could synchronize with my chosen career path as a mental-health counselor. It was a stereotypical light-bulb moment for me, and I haven’t looked back since.
Working at STEPS With Horses, I have been given the opportunity to see how deeply an equine relationship can change someone’s life. Throughout the four years I have been at STEPS, I have witnessed countless moments of connection between our horses and clients, as well as our counselors, equine specialists, and volunteers.
I have chosen specifically to campaign for Maggie because of how she has directly impacted my own life. Maggie has a past, some of which we don’t fully know. But she carries both visible and invisible scars from those who didn’t treat her right. She’s often called the matriarch of our herd, due to her strong-willed and decisive nature. This is coupled with a nurturing side that sets me at ease every time I see her. I feel as though I can relate to her, both her stubbornness and her caring. Several times, as I’ve been tending to pasture chores or simply taking a moment to connect with our herd, Maggie has shown me first-hand how firmly but gently she cares. Whether it was resting her head on my shoulder, or allowing me to lean on her back Maggie was there for me when I needed her.
I am so glad that she is with us at STEPS, where the fullness of her personality can not only shine but positively impact the lives of so many others, four-legged and two-legged alike.
