Healing Horses and Helping Humans™

At Horse Sense, we are dedicated to healing and connection through the wisdom of horses.

At ourt center is a simple truth: healing begins with the horse. Before a horse can help a human regulate, connect, or grow, their own body and nervous system must be supported first. Our process always starts there.

We take time to understand each horse’s history, physical needs, emotional patterns, and stress responses. Through thoughtful care, bodywork, regulated handling, and relationship‑based horsemanship, we help the horse return to balance — not just physically, but in their sense of safety and trust. Only then can they step into their role as a partner in healing.

This is the foundation of our trauma‑aware process:

  • Heal the horse first so their body and mind are not carrying pain, confusion, or bracing.
  • Honor their individuality — their story, their thresholds, their way of communicating.
  • Build safety through consistency, clear boundaries, and emotional steadiness.
  • Invite connection, rather than demand performance.
  • Support the human only after the horse is supported, regulated, and willing.

When the horse is cared for at this level, something extraordinary happens. Their natural presence — the grounding, the honesty, the steadiness — becomes available again. And that is what humans come to horses seeking in the first place.

Most of us turn to horses for peace, clarity, connection, and the feeling of being met without judgment. But when a horse is rushed, pressured, or carrying unresolved tension, that magic disappears. Healing the horse first protects the very qualities that draw people to horses at all.

Through this process, we offer inclusive horsemanship programs, riding lessons, and community events for all ages. Whether it’s youth learning confidence, veterans finding grounding, or families reconnecting through shared experience, every interaction is guided by our commitment to teaching from the horse’s point of view to help the human heal— in that order, because that’s what keeps the partnership honest, safe, and transformative.

Our herd, our instructors, and our community all participate in this process of mutual care. From monthly Horse Tales to parades and local fairs, we bring people and horses together in ways that celebrate connection, learning, and the wellbeing of the animals who make it all possible.

5.28/26 ( our FB post for Horse Sense Education and Advocacy Nonprofit- check it out! )

Week 4 of this incredible journey with @HorsesForMentalHealthCampaign and @ZoetisEquine. We’re closing this week with the feeling that the best is absolutely yet to come.

We were interviewed by the Press Banner’s own editor and journalist, Drew Penner, to talk about the Redwood Mountain Faire (a fair you definitely don’t want to miss this weekend at Roaring Camp in Felton, California!) and to share why we are adopting 27‑year‑old, now‑retired schooling teacher, MyDun.

Drew spent time with Rachel, Sierra, Venus, Sunny Boy, and of course MyDun. MyDun opened the interview by demonstrating the critical importance of rolling—she made sure Drew got a full demo, just in case he needed clarity. Venus followed up with a passionate explanation about the value of horse cookies. Rachel shared her history in the program, and Sierra… well, Sierra got pulled aside by Drew to offer details Kristin would never normally divulge.

Stay tuned for the article to find out what those stories might be.

We also had a wonderful radio interview with KBCZ and the fabulous station manager Tina Davey, who is always such a joy to talk with.

Throughout this month, we’ve reached out to friends, family, and all of you—our incredible community—to share what we’re doing and why we’re committed to making a difference for those who need it most.

It takes a community. It takes family. It takes support to keep going. Thank you for being that support.

We would not have been so focused and engaged had it not been for the HMH team on the National campaign. They inspired us step by step and were there for us to keep us going though every day, every week, of this month.

Sending heartfelt gratitude from the HMH–HSNP Team during Mental Health Awareness Month.

Truth: The first thing you do when entering this Earth is breathe. The last thing you do is exhale. Take a moment today for a deep, beautiful breath—eyes closed, smiling all the way down to your liver. You’re worth that moment.

5/23/26
Felton Remembers: A beautiful day honoring our Veterans 💝sharing My Dun’s story, and connecting with our community. We were especially honored to present a specially decorated flag to the Santa Cruz Blue Star Moms — a symbol of gratitude for the families who carry the weight of service alongside their loved ones.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our silent auction. You truly made a difference today.

3/10/ 26 Huge thanks to Wes and his wonderful positive attitude and patience with My Dun today.
Your coffee donation dollars are hard at work!
Long awaited amazing day where My Dun was strong enough to be able to put her hind leg on a hoof stand. She also was able to have her angles adjusted and accepted with her new posture. 🐎 The next two days will be crucial and we’ll make sure that she gets good cranial sessions to help her body adjust. See the HUGE difference in her posture and ability to stand between the two photos! So inspiring for everyone! No matter what age we are, we have the ability to heal and help others.

💕

We are also still looking for monthly donors sharing a cup of coffee with us! $10 per month, one cup of coffee will give MyDun $120.00 with of safe space to retire and support help with her rehabilitation and will give her the retirement she deserves. Just because she is retired from riding, she is still a teacher and teaches us all what support can do for everyone, no matter the age.
MyDun still has so much to give, just by being in her presence.
