STEPS with Horses is so much more than a few fields with beautiful horses—it is a sanctuary. It is a place where healing begins the moment you arrive, often before a single word is spoken. From Belle, our gentle and welcoming paint who seems to sense exactly when someone needs comfort, to Max, our steady and protective herd leader who creates a sense of safety for everyone around him, each horse plays a meaningful role in shaping an environment where clients, volunteers, and staff feel seen, supported, and at home. And then there is Snoop, our palomino who forms quick and genuine bonds with clients, often helping them feel cared for and accepted in ways that are difficult to put into words. His presence has a way of reminding people that they are worthy of connection and love.
I still remember my first day at STEPS. It was over 100 degrees outside, and I hadn’t been around horses in years. I felt unsure, overwhelmed, and honestly a little intimidated. But the moment I stepped into the pasture, something shifted. The noise in my mind quieted, my body began to relax, and I felt a sense of calm that I hadn’t expected. Without saying a word, the environment—and the horses themselves—helped regulate my nervous system in a way that felt immediate and real.
This is the experience so many of our clients have at STEPS. Individuals who come to us carrying trauma, anxiety, grief, and other mental health challenges often find something here that they have struggled to access elsewhere: a sense of safety. Through equine-assisted counseling, clients are able to build trust, increase emotional awareness, and experience regulation in real time. The horses respond authentically and without judgment, allowing clients to explore their thoughts and feelings in a way that feels both safe and empowering.
At STEPS, healing doesn’t look the same for everyone—but it always begins with connection. With your support, we can continue to provide this unique and life-changing experience to individuals and families who need it most. Together, we can ensure that this sanctuary remains a place where hope is restored, resilience is built, and no one has to navigate their journey alone.
