In the fall of 2023, I contacted Melinda at the Tarpan Horse Conservation Program because there was a Tarpan horse near me at a feed lot–headed to slaughter. Melinda did not hesitate, and though we didn’t know each other at all, together we rescued a 17 year-old mare that we named Katarina (Kat, for short). Little did we know that Kat had EPM and could hardly stand upright. The journey that followed was nothing short of a miracle. Melinda made sure Kat had access to the best veterinary care, supplements, medications, and support devices to help her heal. And heal she has. Thanks to the Tarpan Horse Rescue Program, I got to help save a life–and in doing so, found my heart horse.
