The first time I met Chris, my heart ached for him.
He stood in front of me pale, his eyes dark and distant, scanning the environment without ever settling. He could not make eye contact. His body carried the unmistakable imprint of hypervigilance, as if danger was still just around the corner.
Chris is a combat operations veteran. For two years, he had been living in isolation in his basement. The world outside had become too much. Even being here, standing beside a horse, was not his idea. It was something others hoped might help. He did not yet believe it would.
At first, there were only small moments.
Moments where his breath slowed.
Moments where his shoulders softened.
Moments where his mind, for just a few seconds, became quiet.
The horse asked nothing of him. No explanations. No retelling of trauma. Only presence.
And in that presence, something began to shift.
Chris discovered that with the horse, he could experience peace without having to fight for it. He began to feel again. He learned to connect, to communicate, and eventually, to trust. What started as brief moments of relief became longer stretches of calm, then moments of genuine joy.
Over time, the man who once could not leave his basement began to step back into life.
Two years later, Chris shared something that once felt impossible. He was moving to Montana to begin a new chapter with his fiancé. A future. A life he had once believed was no longer available to him.
His journey was not forced. It was not rushed.
It was rebuilt through quiet connection, through relationship, and through the steady, grounding presence of a horse.
This is just one story of thousands I have witness in this work. Help us provide more opportunities for those in need. Big thank you!
It is not about fixing what is broken. It is about creating the conditions where healing can emerge, where a person can find their way back to themselves, and where hope can quietly return.
