Horses have always been a part of my life – some of my best memories are spending time in the horse barn with my grandfather. As I grew older and life became busier, I drifted away from those early experiences. But during an especially difficult season in my mid-30s, I was reminded of just how grounding and healing horses had always been for me. I knew I needed to find my way back to them.
For the past decade, I’ve been grateful to reconnect with horses through volunteering with various equine-assisted therapy organizations. It has been the perfect blend of my love for horses and my passion for giving back — a way to return to something that brings me peace while helping others find their own.
I am proud to be a part of LEAP (Lowcountry Equine Assisted Psychotherapy), where horses help humanity every day. As an active member of the therapy staff, our horses offer clients a powerful opportunity to see themselves clearly and honestly in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Equine-assisted psychotherapy is an evidence-based and highly effective approach that has helped many people across South Carolina navigate challenges and rediscover their strength.
LEAP’s programs provide support to children, survivors of domestic violence and substance abuse, families, military members, veterans, and first responders. None of this work would be possible without the generosity of people who believe in the healing power of horses and the resilience of the human spirit.
