Why I’m Raising Funds

Fundraising for this campaign is essential because equine-assisted therapy is a highly specialized, resource-intensive intervention that remains inaccessible to many of the people who could benefit from it most, military personnel and first responders.

These populations experience disproportionately high rates of chronic stress, burnout, PTSD, depression, and suicide risk due to repeated exposure to trauma and sustained hypervigilance. Traditional clinical approaches can be effective, but they are not universally accessible or acceptable. Many individuals in these roles are reluctant to engage in conventional talk therapy due to stigma, cultural norms around toughness, or difficulty verbalizing their experiences. Equine-assisted therapy provides a nonverbal, experiential alternative that bypasses those barriers and facilitates emotional regulation, trust-building, and nervous system stabilization in a way that feels safe and approachable.

However, delivering this form of therapy requires significant infrastructure: trained clinicians and equine specialists, well-cared-for horses, appropriate facilities, liability coverage, and program development tailored to trauma-informed care. Unlike standard outpatient therapy, these programs cannot scale cheaply or quickly. Without dedicated funding, costs are often passed on to participants, creating a financial barrier for individuals who may already be navigating medical expenses, career disruptions, or transitional stress.

Fundraising directly offsets these costs, making programs accessible at low or no cost to participants. It also ensures program sustainability, supports the welfare and training of therapy horses, and enables outreach to underserved or rural communities where services are even more limited.

At a systems level, investing in these programs has downstream benefits: improved mental health outcomes, reduced healthcare utilization, better family and community reintegration, and potentially lower rates of substance use and suicide. In other words, fundraising is not just about supporting an alternative therapy, it is about expanding the continuum of care for populations who carry a disproportionate psychological burden in service of others, and ensuring they have access to interventions that actually meet them where they are.
