Horses & Heroes was founded to directly address these gaps in care through a trauma-responsive, evidence-informed model of Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP). Our program uniquely integrates rescued horses with licensed mental health professionals to create a clinically grounded, non-traditional therapeutic environment that reduces stigma and increases engagement among individuals who are often reluctant to seek conventional services.
Through this funding, H&H will expand access to structured EAP programming for veterans and first responders across Kansas, with a focus on early intervention, suicide risk reduction, and resilience building. Measurable outcomes will include reductions in self-reported symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD; increased emotional regulation; and improved social connectedness—key protective factors against suicide.
At Horses & Heroes, we rescue horses not only to save their lives but to honor the powerful stories they carry. Many have endured trauma, abandonment, or neglect—yet learn to trust, regulate, and reconnect. In doing so, they become living metaphors for healing, resilience, and second chances, helping veterans and first responders see that recovery is possible, even after the deepest wounds.
A recent veteran expresses his sentiment after his program at H&H
“Those horses don’t care about rank, ribbons or how tough you pretend to be. They see the truth, the stuff buried deep under the armor. They pushed me to stand still, face my battles head-on & drop the “I’m fine” act. And the team didn’t back down either. They showed me parts of myself I didn’t think were allowed to live anymore.
Because of this experience, I am a better man to the people who matter most:
To my bride — a better husband.
To my kids — a better father.
To my dad — a better son.”
