After serving in the military for 20 years I reached a breaking point with my mental health. I felt like I was someone else and I had drifted far from my authentic self. Additionally, the things I had experienced and participated in molded a negative self-image that put anyone in my life at a disadvantage with me before they even had a chance to know me.
On the journey to healing I applied to the Special Operations Forces (SOF) Network, a network of mental health providers and aspiring providers who were connected to SOF personnel in one way or another. During my interview it was recommended that I apply to Warrior Camp through Trauma and Resiliency Resources. I appreciated the recommendation and hesitated for a long time. After being put on medication and a few more damaging interactions with family and friends I decided to apply, expecting the normal outcome of my previous therapeutic experiences: frustration and guilt.
I showed up to Warrior Camp apprehensive and nervous, not knowing what to expect. What I encountered was a profoundly life changing experience that reinvigorated my belief in the possibility of healing trauma. Every modality, every staff member, every participant, and every horse were expertly hand-selected to safely usher individualized healing journeys over the course of a week.
I will forever be grateful for this program and the amazing people who tirelessly pursue a path of healing and trauma resolution for veterans with similar experiences as me.
Supporting this work through Horses for Mental Health directly impacts Veterans and their ability to heal, reconnect, and reclaim their lives. Please heavily consider donating to this genuinely wonderful program.
